What Murphy Bed Hardware Do You Need?

Murphy beds have long been used to save space. Whether you live in a small house or apartment and crave more space in the bedrooms, or need to use a room for multiple purposes (such as a living room and a bedroom), a Murphy bed can be a great solution. The best thing about Murphy beds is that they are fairly easy to make yourself, and can be used as a temporary solution, like if a relative is over to stay for a few months. Before attempting this on your own, you’ll need Murphy bed hardware.

Mattress

It’s obvious that you will need a mattress for the Murphy bed. Any mattress will do.

Bookshelves

If you want to camouflage your Murphy bed when it’s not in use, you will need two bookshelves that are the same height or taller than the mattress is long, and stick out farther from the wall than the mattress does when it is upended against the wall.

Plywood

The reason Murphy beds stow away so easily is that the mattress is located in a box. You’ll need to measure the mattress and make a plywood box that accommodates it. This is one of the most important items of Murphy bed hardware.

Saw

A saw is obviously needed to cut the plywood.

Hinges

Hinges are a crucial piece of Murphy bed hardware: without them the bed would not swivel up to store against the wall, defeating the purpose of the Murphy bed.

Assorted Tools

Assorted tools make up the rest of your Murphy bed hardware. The usual tools for undertaking a do it yourself project are required. Nails are required to secure the bed box, screws are needed to attach the hinges, and wood glue keeps the plywood together before the nails are hammered. A screwdriver, hammer, measuring tape, and level are also required.

Building a Murphy bed yourself is a difficult task if you have never done it before. It is advisable to consult a step by step guide before attempting it yourself, as this piece merely tells you what Murphy bed hardware you need to get started, and does not supply step by step instructions. A Murphy bed is a great way to save space, especially in a multi-function room, and building one yourself can save you money. Once you have your Murphy bed, you won’t need to worry about your lack of a spare bedroom.
